Toyota Camry struts vs. Others

I didn't like the ride of my 1999 Camry I bought so I put in the ones Monroe sells for the vehicle. I still don't like the ride. It feels to hard and doesn't go over ruff freeway very smoothly like my wives 2003 Camry. Does anyone know if I would get that kind of ride from the Toyota replacement part? I can return my Monroe’s if I don't like them for within 90 days. I just might do that. Does anyone think I will be happier with those struts? Also KYB claims they make OEM struts for that car. My fear is that I will get a stiffer ride from their after market struts vs. the ones sold through the dealer. I just want a soft ride to work not a bone jarring one. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

if you want a soft ride, the oem ones are your best bet....and I think the oem stock ones are actually made by kyb also.....just stay away from the kyb gr-2 which are the aftermarket performance ones for camrys....

if when selling you struts, kyb says oem, they should be almost identical to the ones that you would get from the dealer

Smile Camry Struts

Thank for the reply. I've only found the gr-2 when it comes to KYB; no other model beside the ones you can adjust. It’s a 1999. You wouldn't think the springs are worm out at all would you. Last think. My strut mounts or bearing plates do sound noisy. Would you replace with Toyota’s replacement retrofit ones they were supposed to have improved or would you go with the ones made by the strut manufacture? Also I noticed when replacing the struts the mounting holes are a tight fit instead of the oblong ones I've seen on my Nissans. This leads me to believe I don't need to have the car aligned. Am I wrong? Would aligning the car improve the ride?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat. Should I just go Tokico? How will the ride quality change with these over stock? Thanks.

Tokico HP 'Blues' will definitely be a firmer ride than stock. If soft is what you want stick with stock or perhaps KYB's.

Why? What's wrong with them? I'm using them now with H&R springs, no problems whatsoever....

My ride is harsher than stock for sure, but not unbearable unless you go over bumps and stuff. Tokico users say they have a stiffer ride than the KYB's (which is probably true), but I remember years ago a user said that he used both and that the KYB's were definitely much stiffer. Go figure.

and yeah, tokicos are definately harsher....like in dickson's car....too harsh....too harsh.....

OIC..my bad...I took it as a separate statement...yeah I forgot you're a KYB guy as well. I'm old.

I wonder what the KYB GR2's would be like in a car with stock springs?

So you guys like the KYB GR2's hu... crap... it is so hard to decide.. cuz I am fairly sure that someone was saying that they blow out and that they are very poor quality. So I changed my original plan of getting GR2's to Tokico... but I have 17" rims and my car is lowered 1.25" so a really harsh ride would suck (2 of my rims are already bent a bit.. they are fine now that they are weighted but still) I plan on putting 215/50/R17's on rather then the 215/45/17's i have on there now... hopefully that will help absorb the bumps

for dry tarmac i'd say its not enough

but for dirt and snow, where there isn't as much weight shift, its good
