Question Could I have Rod Knock?!

Well I was talking shit to my friend in his eclipse. Bone stock except for an intake, lowered, sitting on stock rims. I said I could take him out so we went for it. To make a long story short, we were both at 3rd gear redline and I started pulling, I powershifted to 4th but it didn't go to 4th, it went to second instead. My rpms shot past 8k and well into the 9-10k I think. After that I've been hearing some ticking noises and louder ticking noises depending on what part of the engine you are listening to. I had it examined by my autoshop teacher and he said it was my tensioner. But lately I've been hearing some weird noises from near the header but it'll be there only when i warm up the car sometimes, then it'll go away. Could it be rod knock? I'm going to change my timing belt and tensioner spring like tomorrow. I hope it fixes it..but again..could it be rod knock!?

It could. It also could be the timing belt. Get an engine stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint where it's coming from. My rod bearing noise I had awhile back sounded like it was coming from the valve cover when I just listened to it by ear.

Just changed my timing belt yesterday and now it seems to have gone away. But another noise has been bothering me but I know its just my valves clicking. Need to do a valve adjustment soon. I also got a question about the 5S-Fe. How come we have "DOHC" but only one cam gear? Wouldn't it have two cams one spinning each cam-shaft?

over revving like that could cause damage to ur valves....i'd pull the head if u can to examine any potential damage....

The Camry is not an interference engine, so you at least didn't bend any valves. At 10,000 or so RPM you could have damaged any number of things.

The 95 M3 was well known for bending valves if it went above redline even 500 RPM. When I owned one I came close to misshifting once......scared the death out of me since it would have been a 8000+ dollar repair.

If you are lucky you didn't do anything beside damage the tensioner. Good luck.

I'm thinking about selling my Camry for an M3. My friend has one for sale for hella cheap. I hear he blows his motor very often . All it takes is one mis-shift and there goes all your valves and pistons. Kinda scared of getting such a fast car though. Its a big step up from a Camry. hehe

I had both the M3 and the Toyota for 2+ years. I received 2 tickets on the Camry and non on the M3 till the day I sold it. I received a 74 in a 65 on the Jersey Turnpike when I was driving to Baltimore to drop the car off for the new buyer.

Easy to drive and damn fast. The E36 M3 was one hell of a car. I am sure the new E46 is something else also.

I hit the rev limiter several times at 140 and also tracked in at Lime Rock one day. Too expensive as a daily driver unless you have plenty of cash. Tires run 150 to 250 a piece and brake changes aren't cheap either. Overall a reliable car though.
