Got brakes? They feel spongy.

My first post here so first, Hello Toyota Enthusiasts!

Have an 04 Camry XLE. The brakes feel spongy to me. The brakes work well, stopping is not a problem. When I push down on the pedal, if I pump slightly, the pedal goes lower and lower to the floor.

Toyota says 'working as designed'. I find this unsettling. I'm used to Ford and Chevy cars where a spongy brake feel may be the last warning you ever get.

I have not driven any other Toyota and so I am wondering if this is Toy-normal or not. Thanks for any feedback.

I had manually searched the forum, but then did a 'search' button search, and found this topic discussed before. Sorry about that.

you can try bleeding your brakes, that's about all you can do, i doubt the master cylinder is leaking on a brand new car

spongy brakes

hey chrashing, just wanted to let you know that despite my numerous brake bleedings, the pedal still does exactly the same thing on my 89 gen 2. Now I know its not a new car like yours but every camry i've ever driven does the same thing. Don't worry about it, it's just an element of toyota uniqueness.

You want a harder pedal. find an upgraded master cylinder. makes em touchier cause it requires less input to move more fluid.

Whenever I switch over from my Solara to my sister's accord and mom's MDX, the car jerks every time I brake. There's are so much more sensitive i think...

Thank you guys for all the feedback. The brakes do work well, but 'Oh what a spongy feeling, Toyota'.

There are only two plausible reasons for a low pedal: air in the system; and excessive movement between linings and rotors or drums (due to lack of adjustment, an out-of-round drum, or a wobbly disc that's knocking the pistons back so that there's extra space to take up before braking action begins).
