You asked for people's comments... he gave his. Don't complain when you get exactly what you ask for.
His comment is actually the best answer short of actually posting the manual's information word-for-word here. Everything you need to know about that light is listed in your manual.
The light functions as a warning that the airbag is active because someone or something that weighs over a certain amount is in the seat.
If a small child sits in the front seat, a different light will come on, indicating "AIRBAG OFF". That means that the airbag is not active, and will not go off in the event of an accident because it may do more harm than good.
Most new cars came with those lights starting a few years ago. It was the industry's response to ignorant people placing children in the front seat. Before this system was installed, both front airbags would go off regardless of who was sitting in the front passenger seat- including people who were either too dumb to realize that children should always go in the backseat, or desperate because they had four kids and didn't have enough seats in back.
With the new system, the airbag computer (or one of the other 100 computers in the car) can tell if a kid is in the front seat, or a full size adult is in the seat- and respond as necessary in the event of a frontal crash. The light is the way the car keeps you updated on the status of the airbag.
Hope this helps... if you need extra info, please consult your owners manual.
