I am working on a 92 camry for a friend. He had the tranny rebuilt a year ago and every since it shifts backwards. It starts off in 3rd, then 2, then 1 and on to O/D. I am waiting for him to get me the manual. Until then can anyone please tell me where to start?
man, how comes these TN jokes always involve a "friend" (recalling the celica recently)? and why didn't your friend take it to the place where he got it rebuilt when he noticed the problem? and what kind of mechanic can mess up a car that bad? i'm sorry to be making fun of you if this is serious, but i'm a kinda skeptical person, and this sounds like a joke. oh well, let's just play along anyways...

Sorry I'm not joking. He has been leaving it in 2 and driving it around town. If he gets up to 45 mph then it will go into O/D. Yes, it is slow!! He is in his 50's and doesn't care. As far as the garage that rebuilt the tranny they tried to fix it. Even took it back out and went through it again. It is still screwed up. So, if you have any advice on where to start it would be appreciated.
You still haven't explain how it is possible for the car to shift from 3 to 2 to 1.
Because with any common sense that's not possible.
Where to start would be look for another (reputable) transmission shop to look at what's wrong with the tranny. Your friend might want to go to the dealership as well to check the ECU.
