delay shifting

How do you delay the shifting of gears on an automatic. I feel that my car shifts too early (around 2000 rpm) and I think that it will be more efficient to delay that shifting around 200 rpm or so.

How do I make my automatic car shift a little later?

It's called ETC Power button, just push it. Also drive your car hard for a few days and the ECU will reprogram to your new driving style and hold you in each gear longer.

or you can bump it through the gears yourself, L, 2, 3, and then O/D

Actually there's a cable that connect from throttle lever to transmission (opposite of the throttle cable) is adjustable. Technically they call TV. If you adjust that cable, it will change your shifting point. Loosen will shift earlier, and tighten will shift later.

One more thing: if you shift earlier, it's economical. Fuel consumpsion lower, trans life longer.

For higher performance, just follow the Oldman.

Wouldn't OD (off) help you rev more till the next gear change? I'd do that then power/Ect to gain more rev's between shifts!

Does the ect button only make the gears shift at higher rpm? I thought the ect button also messed around with your fuel ratio and other stuff too.

The only cable that connects to the tranny is the shifter cable. It bolts to the neutral safety switch on the front of the tranny and the other end goes to the shifter.

Tranny itself is electronicly controlled.

consider having your valvebody re-calibrated by a reputable performance tranny shop. This isn't gonna necessarily change the shift points, but will make shifts much more firm because of the increase fluid pressures.

Just found this on the web.

Starting in '95, the 4-speed automatic provides standard electronic controls that adjust shift patterns to match how the car is driven.

Does that mean pre 95 that it doesn't matter how you drive, its all the same?

Also found this interesting.

Finally, the mainstay 2.2-liter engine drops 5 horsepower in '96 due to new tuning implemented to meet stricter emissions limits in all states. The reconfigured engine produces 125 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 145 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm.
