Gen5 Camry high speed yield better MPG.

Anyone noticed that going at higher speed on freeway will yield a better MPG than at lower speed? I have a 2003 Camry XLE I4 which have a trip computer that calculates the average MPG and such. I have been going at a constant speed of 62-65 MPH on the freeway for about a year now and the average have always stay at 31.4-31.6 MPG. A week ago I drove around 74-80 MPH and I was surprised to see the average MPG jump to be 32.6-32.8. The car is stock, I do about 75% freeway and I drive about 30 miles everyday.

Have you tried going 55?

According to this link you will get even better mileage. It is interesting to find out if they are correct.

"You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas."

Did you read this line from the first page of the link semyonlibman posted. It's one I firmly agree with. At highway speeds, the higher the RPM of your engine, the lower the fuel mileage. I can get noticeably better mileage on my 07 Camry 4 cylinder at 68 MHP than at 72.

Also, that mileage computer isn't the most accurate tool in the world. If you really want to figure your mileage, divide the gallons put in to the car at your next fill-up, in to the miles you have traveled since your last fill-up. You will notice a difference from what the mileage computer reads. It can be more or less. Do this a few times and you will notice a difference.

The increase in MPG you witnessed was a result of something else. Perhaps different gas, different weather conditions, ambient temperature, etc. Or maybe you replaced the air filter or other maintenance.

Good points. It can even be wind direction; wind behind you or driving in to the wind.

I think I would agree with you to a point. I'm not saying higher speeds gets better mileage. But each gear has an optimum speed for best gas mileage.
