Unhappy The 2 Year Oil Change!

My pops owns the 1992 Camry. He doesnt take care of ANY of his cars that he owned. Well the jerk didnt get a oil change for about TWO YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this out 3 months ago. I took out the dip stick and found..... SLUDGE! At the very bottom of the stick. THICK BLACK AS NIGHT, SLUDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No idea how the car kept running but I change the oil later that day with a Wix oil filter and 5w 30 oil. Then a few days later I put in 1/3 can of Sea Foam.

Its time to change the oil again after 300 odd miles. (BTW he has never put synthetic in)

I need EVERYONES opinion......

SHould I use a Synthetic BLEND? Or just just plain oil?

Should I use 10w 30? 5w 20? 5w 30?

Should I use Sea Foam again? Or maybe something else?

I want to clean the engine but I dont want to clog any of the oil ports in the engine with the sludge coming off the walls of the engine.

Thanks

Take the valve cover off see how bad it is. You can clean the valve cover itself, off the engine. You want to clean the oil pan too, but start with the valve cover.

Take a look at this thread for some pics and advice.

Post a pic too!

OK... 3 hours later I read EVERYTHING!

Eyes are popping out of my head here.

It seems Changing the oil in three 500 mile intervals after adding Sea Foam is the way to go. Also, use Wix filters. Still not sure about what oil to use though and at what viscosity.

I would use a 15w40 Delo, Delvac1300, Rotella T, or similar high detergent Heavy Duty oil, which has more dispersants that are used to keep soot in suspension, and prevent varnish/sludge.

I would use a 30-weight HDEO rather than a 15W-40. In a conventional oil, Shell has Rotella T 10W-30 (CI-4/SL). Since he doesn't seem to like spending any money to maintain his car, a synthetic HDEO might be a tough sell but Amsoil 5W-30 HDD (CI-4+/SL) and Chevron Delo Synthethic 0W-30 (CG-4/SJ) are available.

I would use what the car called for in the owner's manual and also on the top of the oil cap, which I believe is 10W-30.

Any multigrade 30-weight oil (0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30) will have the correct viscosity at operating temperature if 10W-30 is specified in the owner's manual. HDEOs have have stronger detergent additives and higher levels of ZDDP at the expense of friction modifiers than Starburst oils.

I once checked the oil on a Toyota Townace SBV work van, upon pulling the dipstick I found it was completely black. Not black with sludge but black with baked on soot/ oil. I literally scraped the black powder off the dip stick, put it back in and found not a drop of oil - yet this van still ran daily like nothing at all! (I wound up putting a few litres in it and had it serviced not long after).

+1 on removing the valve cover and pan for a clean. Check the oil pick-up screen as well, that might be clogged.
