Pontiac Grand Am

Somebody I know is having difficulty with his 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. I cannot find a decent Pontiac forum, so I figured I'd ask here and see if maybe this is not car-specific problem.

The problems he has described include the following:

1) At high speeds, when you release the accelerator, the car will slow down to 50mph and remain at that speed.
2) High idle.
3) The engine will stall/shut down at random.

Any ideas?

I really have no experience with Pontiacs of that vintage, but if it were a Camry I would say start by cleaning the throttle body. It may be very dirty and the throttle valve inside of it may be sticking and causing the problems.

I've been going back to post final updates on some of my old threads.

Thank you Mike for the information. I relayed the info to my friend shortly after your post. He cleaned the TB and said that his car has never run better!

The coasting at 50 though, I experienced in my 88 bonneville.

The engine had enough torque to let it coast for a really long time.
