stupid stuck transmission - HELP, Please!

Hi all,

first post, I'm hoping for a miracle here.

I got a bit stuck in the snow two days ago and now I've been having nothing but problems with my 89 Camry All Trac A540H Auto Transmission.

With the engine OFF -
On the inside of the car: Shift into N, the car will roll backwards no problem.
In the engine bay: Shift through gears, can see the cable actuating the shift mechanism, no problem, no binding by the looks of it.

With the engine ON -
On the inside of the car:
1) In P - hit the gas, the car tries its best to roll forward
2) In R - hit the gas, the car revs labored and doesn't move
3) In N - hit the gas, it's like I'm in D
4) In D/2/L - hit the gas, it's like normal
In the engine bay: Same as with the engine off, everything looks normal (on the surface).

I have checked the electrical connections to the transmission by just checking to see if all of the connectors are connected properly - I have not tested with a VOM or anything else for diagnostics.

I'm stuck, this is my daily driver and it's basically dead in the water and now I can't move it because I can't back-up out of my driveway...please, any advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks

did you try to rock your car out of the snowbank? (as in drive, reverse, drive, reverse...) trannies aren't a big fan of that, older ones especially

get a buddy (holds the brake and takes care of the shift lock), start the car, and try shifting it into reverse from inside the engine bay (moving that lever around)

Nope, in and out of the snow, no rocking...

Tried manually shifting into R in the bay, no joy there either. It's really acting like it is stuck in first gear and (a wild guess) that being in P is just keeping it from going due to some safety mechanism.

Thanks for the suggestion though! Anyone got any others or is this old bucket o'bolts headed for Toyota heaven...
