Start by checking for engine trouble codes. You can do this with a piece of wire or a paper clip. The procedure will be in any manual. Report back here with the code(s) if any are present. In addition, you need to tell us what engine you have and how many miles are currently on the car.

Go over to the Camry forum at AutomotiveForums, com. There are Toyota factory service manuals stickied at the top of that forum's home page. Download the generation 3 manual. It should have the procedure along with an explaination of any codes in the manual.

ok so ive got a 14 and 22 as the code .
i took of the tb and the egr and cleaned it all up .egr seem to have alot of crud and biuld up so that was a job by it self.was almost completely blocked.

the problem is still there .poor idle no accelleration when you step on it it slowly climbs but will not go higher than 1000 rpm.

at this point i dont know what else to do.do you think the ig module could be the problem or is this something deeper.

The codes point to the igniton system and the engine coolant temperature sensor. You need to test the engine cooolant temperature sensor both cold and warm. To do this you will need a digital volt/ohmeter and the specs from the manual. If the sensor is out of spec, replace it. You can start the ignition system testing by checking the coil inside the distributor. They are a known trouble area on the first 3 generations of Camrys. Use the digital volt/ohmeter and the specs from the manual again. Also inspect the coil visually for any cracking. They have a tendancy to crack with age and mileage and short thenselves to ground on any metal inside the distributor.

good news /bad news /pics inside

ok guys i found my problem. after a very long proccess of illimination . i found that there is a little condensar on the inside of the distibutor that has burn up. the wire that attaches it to the coil and is grounded on the distib. anyway it burned up the wire. now the problem is no one sells that condensar. i've called all the local auto parts and they all want you to buy the whole set up .which i think is B.S . can any one tell me if a dealer would have it .if so any idea on a price . or is there anyone with a spare distrib that would be willing to help a brother out and sell me that condensar .

if so that would be great i have a

92 camry 4Cyl 2.2L GAS, FI, 5SFE

i have included pics of everything i found .any idea on why it would do this at all.i just dont wanna fix it to find that it may be a sign of something major to come .i do know this is not usual wear and tear.

thanks for all you help.

Bad coil

I had the same problem. First after having the AM1 fuse blow I FINALLY traced it back to a bad condenser similar to what you have. The other problem was not as easy to find but just as easy to replace, the coil. I measured the resistance but unless you use a megger (not recommended) you can't tell when and if the coil will break down. I got mine from pep boys $45 (Beck Arnley). I also got the condenser from the dealer for $4 OMG!!! Right?!

P.S. To replace the coil I HIGHLY recommend pulling the distributor, there are four screws holding the coil in.

yeah i fixed the coil and condencer along with all the other parts drove the car for 2 days after that and the timing belt broke .its missing a couple teeth.so now its down again . im having a problem trying to locate a tool to hold the balance wheel while i loosen the crank bolt. i tried using an impact wrench but that wouldnt brake it loose. i dont think the one i have is big enough.

Timing Belt

I used an impact wrench and a rubber strap wrench to hold it, rubber so you don't mash the grooves on the main pulley. A rubber one gives a bit too much but, all I had at the time. Next time I'll use a cloth type.

no actually the car belong to my inlaws .they gave it to me 2yrs ago. it used to be a great car until this happen .never had 1 problem and i always did the all the service on the car . before they gave it to me they had all the belts and everything changed.i dont drive it much as i have 2 newer vehicles. so when it broke down it was a big suprise and dissapointment.
other than all this stuff going wrong out the blue. the car it's self is in great shape.i will get it fixed sooner or later just havent had the time.
