Hi All; I live in Jamaica... and here it's hot as hell most days... I can't decide whether to leave my Camry without tint (as it is currently) and keep that clean look or to go "function over form" and dark it up with some midnight black tint (legal here) and keep the car cooler and have teh A/C work less hard ... Thing is... I used to own a swift with dark tint and on two seperate occasions car theives tried to break into it... unsuccessfully thank God... After i removed the tint I had no more encounters with them... I know in most cases ... whatever trends are started in the US is eventually followed here... and that includes car break in methods & jacking... How is it with you guys there? ... Does the tint block the thieves view of possible stuff to steal in the car or does it just offer a cover for them allowing them to be unseen if they intend to steal the car...?

What an interesting concept. Never thought about it that way. Here in Quebec Canada we can put almost no tint on top of what is their (police want to see in car, and they say they want drivers to see each other). Myself I will often leave the sunroof open and always have the immobilizer set. No reason to get in my car unless its to steal it. My understanding is they even have sensors today to pick up on batteries in computers and such (not sure if that is true). So I just keep it clean with nothing to steal but the car itself. Would never have thought about just break and entry because it is tinted.
Here it is even illegal to leave packages and other items visible in the car. Kind of the opposite thinking to what your issue is. Also illegal to leave it unlocked. Which is funny when you think about convertibles. As always laws that make no sense.
EDIT: As an after thought, the AC works all the time when on. Unless temperature controlled type.
Happy driving.

Hmmm... Interesting to hear another country's stance on auto tinting laws ... I'm not certain about Quebec... but here... our police fall way short when it comes to recovering stolen cars... as a matter a fact... out of every 10 cars stolen... only one may be recovered... depending on the motive behind it.... In cases where criminals steal cars to carry out a crime... they usually go for the tinted rides to give them a visual cover... But in the case of just stealing a car to scrap it and sell the parts... they don't seem to be partial to either... Just wanted some feedback on how it is elsewhere other than here....
Maybe a light tint? 35%? You can still see through with 35% but gives you a bit of privacy, Any tint blocks out most UVA and UVB rays. I'd recommend it, much better than getting a drivers tan on your right arm, or in your case, left.

Just dont tint the windows. It doesnt make that much of a difference right
Well... to be honest... Tinting only makes sense to me if it's real dark... that's when it's most effective in my opinion... I've driven in cars before with very dark tint... and even after being parked in the broiling sun... inside is still cool enuff to go sit down in ... reducing the need for a/c most times.. Plus i drive around with my 1 1/2 yr old son in the back most times... and even tho the a/c is blowing cold.. i still see him flinch everytime the sun shines in his face...

I agree, 35% tint is all ya need!
But I'm curious, What happens to the stolen cars in Jamaica after their used in a crime if only 1 in 10 are recovered?
Is the ocean around Jamaica full of stolen vehicles?

LOL nawww... no cars in the ocean... I was saying that in the case where they're stolen to carry out crimes.. they're normally recovered... but those that are stolen by car theives ... u'd have to be extremely lucky to get those back, they're normally taken to garages of crooked mechanics and scrapped down to the shell ... then usually, the shell is burnt to cover their trails and the parts sold... Also... some of those same mechanics may have a customer's car and be in need of a rare part... their solution is to sometimes go out and steal another car of the same model... then remove what they need... scrap the rest and sell everything else... disgusts me to the core... Police crack down on their rackets every now and then... but not nearly often enuff.
But yeah... i think i will get the 35%... just have to get accustomed to more police stops... daily... but it's for a good cause...
My car has never gotten broken into and IMO, I don't think tint will really make a difference. Regardless of tint/no tint, just gotta be sure not to leave anything in sight to tempt thieves. I'd go ahead and tint your car for the added privacy and heat rejection.
I tinted my car a year after I bought it and I only wish I had tinted it right after I got it instead!

+1.
35% is dark at all, 'factory' tint is usually 20%. Go onto ebay and search 'car tint film". They usually have a guide as to what 50%, 35%, 20% and 5% looks like, compared to no tint. 5% is limo and will be a nightmare driving at night in suburban areas.

my dad tints cars for a living and has no problem with theives, and even if they try to break out your window the tint should prevent the glass from shattering into your car.

Yeah it does... so even in the event that someone smashes your glass... little to no shards or splinters will be flying into your eyes and face...

Make sure to get a life time replacemnet plan. you never know what will happen. unless you do it yourself, witch i don't suggest. most people have replacemnt plans through the company that provides the Tint. you best bet is Sunguard. it seems to hold up the longest without turning purple.
