Well for one thing, it's the only thing stopping crap blocking and clogging the injectors. All the crap that's currently in the filter is constantly getting rammed by more fuel/gunk, causing some of the particles to break up and end up in your injectors. Impede flow as well? Just change it, its not like it's terribly expensive, i picked mine up for $20 or $30 (aftermarket). If you go aftermarket, search around i bit. There was a 'specific' filter for my gen 2 Camry and it was $40, but there was a universal one that was compatible with my camry. I got that one instead and it was cheaper.
I changed mine early this year and as fuel dribbled out of the inlet side, i could see all this sediment coming out with it.
