Thank you both very much for responding to my plea for help. The situation was resolved only yesterday, Feb 20, which is why I have not replied to you earlier.
The short answer is that my husband replaced the high stop light bulb and the "lights" light seems to have shut itself off for good. (My fingers are crossed.)
When we got your responses we checked out the lights, or at least thought we did. All lights seemed to be working, but we forgot about the brake light in the rear window. When we found that it was off, a day later. Jerry went and got a new bulb in anticipation of replacing the old one.
When a warm enough day to work outside for a few minutes came around, the problem had fixed itself! The idot light in question had stopped coming on. Then, after two days, it reappeared.
At that point hubby reasoned that there was a short in the wiring and owned up to a lack of knowing how to take care of that. I pressed the case for the bulb being bad somehow.
Jerry went out to the car, took off the hood from the stop light, and discovered that I was right! The glass was loose inside the brass base. He extracted the old one and inserted the new. Presumably, we'll no longer have an intermittent problem.
Thanks, again, for getting back to us so quickly and for insisteing that the idiot-light system was worth taking seriously.
