Coolant temp gauge messed up

For some damn reason, no matter how hot or cold it is, my temp gauge shoots all the way to hot. I checked the gauge, looks ok, and I checked the coolant temp at the thermostat, everything looks ok. Anyone got this prob? Its gotta be something electrical, cuz if the readings true than I wuda blown my engine bout 6 months ago.

Could be the temperature sending unit is shorted somewhere. I don't have my manual with me, but if you remove the plug from the sending unit and turn the key to on, the thermostat should be at C. If you take a jumper wire and short that plug to a ground it'll shoot to hot. If you unplug it and it still goes to hot, then somethings messed up with the wiring. and it's going to ground somewhere.

Yep, tried that and its still at H. Oh well, one more task I have to add to list.
