removing side rear panels from a '99

Anyone know how to get the side rear panels out of a 1999 Camry? I popped off the only visible fastener and I don't see how to get them out.

Ultimately I'm trying to get the rear deck out -- I've read numerous posts on three or four different threads about how it is/isn't necessary to remove the side panels to get the rear deck out. It's definitely going to be necessary in my case, unless I cut off the part of the deck that's tucked behind the side panels. All other fasteners, hooks, etc. have been disengaged and/or broken off and I've followed all other instructions on other threads about removing seats, brake light, etc. I've done it all but the panels will have to come out for sure, I swear to it!

Thanks for your help!

=)

You should be able to take the rear deck out without taking your seat and the side plastic panel out.

fold down your seat (both of them), remove 3rd brake light.
There are three plastic nuts and 3 plastic hooks that keep your rear deck in place.

you simply just pull upward until you unlocked all three plastic nuts, there are located around the middle area of your deck, one nut of the leftside, one at the middle and one at the right. Don't pull too hard tho, your rear deck might bend LOL

after than, go you your trunk, and simply stuck your finger into whatever holds you can find near your speaker area, you should be able to feel THREE plastic hook, one at the left, one at midde and one at the right.
once you found them, use a plactic stick of metal stick, doesn't matter, stuck that stick into the hold where the hooks are, and start pushing upwards, there are pretty firm so you might need to apply a bit more force. once you unhook them, go back to your backseat and just pull the whole deck towards you.

hope this helps.

no such luck... I've already tried all your suggestions. All fasteners have been unfastened, all hooks, everything. I wish I had a digital camera so I could show people what I'm up against. the deck is positively not coming out unless I saw it in half or get those plastic panels out. I've pulled as hard as I can, I've creased the deck in two places. It's physically impossible because it needs to bend upward slightly at the middle to get the sides of the deck out from under the plastic panels. the panels prevent it from sliding forward to the front of the car, and the rear window prevents it from bending upwards enough to get the sides of the deck out from under the panels.

would a Haynes manual explain how to remove the side panels?
thanks for your help.
