In my '94 with the premium Eclipse sound system they were around 15 watts per channel, the speakers were all paper cone, and I don't think they've changed them much since then.
For the best sound you should sound deaden (AKA dynamat) the doors, or at least the area around the speakers. Fatmat is a good brand to go with, it can be found on eBay.
If you want to go all out on the speakers, Kicker Resolution RS6 would be a nice choice, or CDT CL-61's. theZeb.com has the CDT's for $150, a definite steal. Anything from MB Quart, Eclipse, or Infinity would also be a great choice, as far as specific models, it's mostly a matter of preference. I can't emphasize eneough that they should be listened to first. Having good quality speakers that you paid good money for but don't like the sound of because it's not detailed eneough, or overly shrill, or excessively harsh is no fun.
Then I'd recommend running 50-75 watts RMS per side to the front speakers from a good quality amp. I put my amps under the front seats, but had to remove the rear heat ducts to do so.
Then it's all about proper installation and aiming. If the car came with seperate tweeters from the factory that may be a good place to put the new ones, otherwise you'll get the best imaging by placing them as far down and forward as you can without them getting in the way of anything or vice versa.
A good place for opinions and answers to car audio questions is
