explosive seats

The seatbelt anchor on my Camry broke and the dealer wants around 210 bucks to install a new one so I'll have to figure out how to remove the thing myself. it appears that I might have to remove the seat itself so I looked through my chilton manual. It says that there might be some pyrotechnic explosive thingies rigged to the seat that I'll have to send to the dealer anyway. Does a 99 4 cylinder LE have this special feature or can I just easily remove and reinstall it by following the manual?

Depends on the car. I think they are talking about side airbags that were an option for certain years and were placed in to the sides of the seats. Does your car have side airbags? If you don't know, call Toyota corporate at 1-800-331-4331 and ask customer service. Have your VIN handy and they should be able to tell you what options came with your car.

On a side note I removed the seat on my 98 Camry with side airbags some years ago to change an O2 sensor. I just unbbolted it and moved it back a few inches so I had the room I needed. I didn't have any problems. Most manuals recommend you disconnect the battery and wait 90 seconds if you are going to work on a car with air bags, so that may be another option for you. Check the manual.

Your seat should be labelled "SRS" on the side bolster if it has an air bag in the side. Check under it for a yellow wire and connectors.
