Buying Toyota OEM parts.
Getting ready to do the clutch in my car, so I was online to my favorite OEM parts place (found of course through this board). They had everything but the drive axle seals. I wanted these for next week, and it wasnt looking good. So I tried my local Toyota dealer (otherwise known as the big rip off). They asked about all the parts I was looking for (which was really just the axle seals), and I gave them the list. Turns out they didnt have any of it, but could get it by day after tomorrow, all at MSRP. Just for fun, I asked if they would match on-line toyota dealer prices. He asked what they were, and then went to talk to his boss.
When he came back he said, the online prices are exactly 25% off MSRP, and he could offer 20% off, which is what they extend to local mechanics. I figured the 5% was a wash with the shipping, I do have to pay sales tax, which sort of wipes that out, but to have the parts when I want was worth it to me, picked up around the corner. Still saved about $50-$60 altogether. Never hurts to ask, right?
