Shifter assembly modification details

I'm modifying a gen4 shifter assembly to allow the use of a TRD quickshifter in my gen3 tranny swap. Someone had pictures on how to modify the gen4 shifter and now I can't find them.

Anyone know where these are???

i think with the '96 shifter assemble u can use the stock gen 3 assembly with modifications for the trd short throw shifter, but i'm not totally sure. Does your shifter have the plastic assemble with bolts that hold it down into the metal? the other configuration involves threaded studs coming up into the shifter assembly with bolts from the top...and for that i think you need the gen 4 assembly, but let me know and i'll see what i can do to help.

OK, this is gen3 shifter assembly I have:

This is the gen4 assembly I was going to use for the TRD quickshifter:

I tried the TRD shaft in the gen3 assembly and it seems to fit. The lower cable attachment at the bottom of the shaft does come down quite far...but it does with the gen4 assembly as well.

Thanks for any tips!!!!!

Steve

ok, here's what i did. on the gen three assembly i seperated the plastic section from the metal lower section. then I used longer bolts and a few nuts that were too big as spacers on the corners to extend the length that u have for the bottom of the shifter. then all you do is put in the TRD nob and re install it. if you choose to use the gen 4 set up, just mount the lever in the assembly and mount the assemble in the car.. that simple, just make sure everything moves properly and make the neccesary adjustments.

Excellent! Thanks for the feedback & tips.

I like how the gen3 shifter assembly puts the shifter closer to the stock spot than the gen4 assembly. So I think I'll mod the gen3 assembly as you pointed out.

Anyone need a gen4 assembly all ready modified to fit in a gen3???

Thanks again!

Steve

so im not sure I understand does the gen 4 assembly fix the problems with the gen 3 hidth? Because my TWN shifter is rubbing the bottom of the body of the car causing just a bit of shifter stifness. I want the assem to come up higher and does or dosnt the gen 4 do that? Thankss

Yes, it does. That's why I started out with the Gen 4 shifter assembly to use in a 3rd gen. I was trying to use the TRD quick shifter for the gen 4. So your TWN shifter would also work. The shifter sits up a little higher in the gen 4.

^ Get some longer bolts and shim the bish up with some washers. Its ghetto, but hey it might work.

Have you tried TAP Recycling (www.taprecycling.com) or a local junkyard for the shifter?
