I'm not picking on anybody per say, but I'm simply amazed at the number of people annoucing 3S-GTE projects. I understand that its probably the most powerful 4 cylinder engine that'll drop in the Camry, but....
I don't get why people are willing to spend thousands on getting 200+ hp out of sedan that's so old. And I can't help but think a lot of these are going to fall through.
I'm going for a 3S-GE because I want to increase the power, but not to the point where it would be cheaper just to get another car. For that matter, the 5S-FE, 3S-FTE, and 5S-FTE projects seem to make more sense.
1) Why not?
2) 3SGTE has mad aftermarket support, and ppl here are into tuning the camry, so it makes sense
3) 3SGTE is one of Toyota's best engines, so good that Toyota used it in one of their racing Supras instead of a 2JZ.
4) Some of us have a bit of JDM feelings inside (some Gen 3s in Japan had 3SGE's built in - http://www.alljapanesecars.com)
5) Because once it's done, we'll be able to clown honda by getting on the cover of a ricer magazine.
Okay, I read these replies, and I think you guys are missing a crucial point....
I'm talking about the 3S-GTE, not the 3S-GE. I know there were Vistas in Japan with the 3S-GE. That's another reason why I want one.
As for the 3S-GTE being the best engineered inline four.....it shares the same block and head design as the 3S-GE, so wouldn't that be just as viable an option?
I'm specifically asking why you need a turbocharged Camry. You don't need to explain yourself to me, I'm just curious.

Dude,
I'm gonna start on a 3SGTE project on my Camry. Why you ask cause simply put
1. Lots of aftermarket support
2. Power-the 3SGTE is capable of making a good amount of HP
3. Rare- How many Camry's you know that have a 3SGTE in it? There's only a few.
4. Cause through research I figured that the 3SGTE was the best engine for what I wanted in an engine
5. And, cause it's my car and I can do whatever the f*** I want to it.
And why am I going to go spend thousands of dollars on another car when I like my Camry and I can spend that money on making it better.
My 2 cents.........................

i think what the dude is saying is why do you need/want a camry with over 200 hp... and the answer is...people expect to be owned by a supra, but they dont expect a camry with 300hp flying by them. its the shock factor. its called a sleeper! if you havent learned this yet, you should do more reading on the board. also, if you arent interested in modding your car, why are you on a camry/toyota enthusiast board...
It's so fun to pull up at a stoplight beside a 4cyl honda that has a bumblebee exhaust set-up and thinks his car his flat out "FAST"...lmao. Green Light and the camry leaves him like an ugly prom date. itsa great feeling to have a car nobody thinks would be able to amount to anything (speedwise) and prove them wrong.
It's also because alot of people would rather turn a car that would otherwise be known as a family car and make it into something tototall different instead of getting a car that is already known to be "supped up" and just umm..."sup" it up more.
Its like asking why do you like your car to run ???? um for the pure enjoyment of it ... Just because its mine and I started this project and planned it out. I dont know ... trying not to be big headed about it. But, I think I'm the first one to actually do this swap ... Not just the motor the full complete swap.
Why not start with a 3s-gte ??? 3s-ge horsepower starts at what 160 ??? Thats whats a Stock US spec High mileage 3s-gte puts down to the wheels...
