Gen5 Camry 2002 V6 occasionally dies on idle

Hello, I have a 80k Camry that started to die from time to time on traffic lights. The car performs great. No check engine light but occasionally after relatively long drive and engine is hot, it just dies when I stop. If I turn the ignition and press the acceleration pedal 1/3 , it turns back on, but if I do not force it 1-2 times to high RPM it dies again. But once I force it, it goes back to normal and performs great. It happens 2-3 time per week. The rest of the time the car keeps very sturdy idle. No fluctuation of RPM or anything that may show signs of instability. This is what I have done so far:
  • Checked the fuel line and fuel filter – clean and performs great. I doubt this can be the problem because the car performs great on high RPMs.
  • Removed and cleaned the throttle body. It was dirty and now if totally clean, but did not resolve the problem. I had to reset the computer after the cleaning. The car died on idle twice since than.
  • Removed and cleaned the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve.
  • I know this kind of a problem can be caused by Idle Control Valve (ICV) but I do not see it on this model.
Do you know if the 2002 V6 Camry has ICV or the idle is controlled by the trouble valve?
What else can cause this kind of a behavior?

does ur car shake before it die ? every Engine will be HOT after a long drive try to do a COOLANT Flush aswell, yes V6 Doudle Head CAM has ICV.

The MAF sensor is clean, fuel injection was flushed 15k. Air filter changed 3-4 months ago and still clean. Oil changed 1k ago. All fluid levels stock. Tune up was done 15k ago.

No it does not shake. It just acts like runs out of gas, but if I press the gas pedal it forces the engine right a way and some times I have to press it 1-2 more times to fix the idle and the problem dissapears. And again I'm driving the car every day but it this issue hapens only 2-3 times a week. Otherwise the car holds perfect idle and runs great. It just acts like that out of the blue. I cannot reproduce it in my garage in otder to diagnose it.

All the sympthoms are like IACV needs cleaning and I know on the previous model it was under the throttle valve, but this model only has two hoses there. here is a picture:

Can somebody tell me where exactly the IAC valve on 2002 V6 camry is?

Just a quick update from this morning:
I had my OBD II reader connected while I was driving, and I noticed when I stop at stop lights my RPMs are consistent per stop but differ from stop to stop. For example I will have 630 rmp at one stop, 680 at the next one, 600 on another but whatever it is it just keeps it consistent during idle (does not fluctuate at all even if I turn on/off the AC) One time it went down to 300 and was shaking but did not die. It stayed on 300 for about 8-10 sec until I pressed the gas peddal and RPM went back to 680.

Could it be an O2 sensor that's not tripping the check engine light? A friend of mine has an '04 CR-V which ran perfectly fine but it had a CEL. I managed to kill it twice with my relative's OBDII hooked up. It simply turned off, no violent shaking..when it was fine, you wouldn't know anything was wrong.

Just curious if you've changed your O2 sensors yet. The V6 will probably be a PITA but it sounds like you're fairly handy and can do it yourself.

Good luck!

I have not touched the O2 sensors yet, but seems like I'm getting correct readings on both of them. I have no problem replacing staff on my car, but I do not wont to start spending money based on guessing . This is why I'm trying to get to the ICAV but for some reason I do not see it .

Can somebody tell me where is the idle air control valve? I could not find it under the throttle body.

You might have better luck posting in the gen 5/6 forum. The general discussion doesn't get as much traffic.

I did some Googling and found this mentioned: "1mz-fe's, it's located on the underside of the throttle body" - my mom's Camry has the same 3.0L V6 as your '02 but I haven't looked for the IAC valve. Good luck.
