Do performance chips really work?

Hey everyone, I have a 1996 Toyota Camry DX 4 cylinder. I'm always looking for ways to improve performance (on a budget) and fix stuff here and there on my car. So my question is do performance chips really work? Is it easy to install?

I saw this one on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Perfo...Q5fAccessories

I'm wondering if anyone knows if this actually works and will not harm my car in anyway. Or if you know of a better one please link me too. Plus, if you know how to install it I would appreciate some DIY instructions. They say it takes 20 mins but I don't want to risk it and trust their instructions that I might not be able to follow. Thank you.

LOL, true, aftermarket chips are bullshit, they either have never worked or killed the engine quickly hehe

Kenny_McCormic, are you sure you are from South Michigan and not from South Park?
cheers

Well a supercharger on that I4 will have a good chance of giving you an extra 100hp, but the cost of the charger a rebuild on the bottom end (strongly suggested). Is gonna cost you lots of pennies. ;-)

EDIT: Actually with that extra boost on an old engine I think a full engine rebuild. Will need to remap and a better breather at the back. Of course a ton of extra torque is gonna require a upgraded gearbox. Then lets not forget with all that extra acceleration you are gonna need some serious shoes on the beast. An clearly strut bar on the front. And of course suspension upgrades. Well you get the idea.

A great project. Please send pics as you go along.

A truly great project. Imagine you could own a car that will be slower than a M3, handle worse, and cost more. But it will still whack a punch.

if looking for HP I would start with a V6 model in first place and would go with manual tranny for best results, otherwise it's not much worth it ... i4's are great daily runners though, very efficient and smooth

of course go with supercharger by all means if it's your hobby and you like having fun with it

You don't have to spend a ton of money to greatly increase the handling. My car can easily outhandle higher class cars, both stock and modified (depending on what mods are done). Of course that's heavily based on driver skill/experience/knowledge of the road as well.

Anyways, I think your money would be best spent on suspension upgrades if you do decide to mod the Camry. But I agree, there are better platforms out there to start out with; what I mean is that you can spend less money to get a lot more out of the car than you would with a Camry, or just get a sports car to begin with. I guess it all comes down to personal preference and what you would like to achieve with any given car.

Would a turbo charger be easier and/or cheaper to install rather than a supercharger then? Yea, I always wish my Camry was a V6 to being with, then I would definitely look into all of these suggestions you guys have made.

What car would have the most bang for my buck then? I prefer Asian manufactured cars, but I wouldn't mind an American car either, but it has to have some muscle.

Oh sorry, do not put LOL when your serious.

Start by looking at V6 cars or V8's. Not an I4 would be a good idea. An if you want serious muscle with cornering forget about front wheel drive. Look at rear wheel or 4 wheel.

Then what price range? What fuel mileage? What do you want to do with it?

EDIT: Super chargers/turbo chargers all have issues to install. My suggestion is leave that to those that know. I have spent over 30 years as an aircraft tech. An rebuilt more than one car (from the ground up). An I would not attempt such an undertaking without support.
