Well if you can fit a big filter go for it. Your engines only needs a small one but a big one wont hurt. HELL...the bigger the better. You wont have to wash it every oil change...just every 2nd oil change!
forget K&N, get these Powerstack filters. They have all the different sizes you would want, even have color trim options, but their main goal is performancne, hense the reason why they use that specific design. They flow higher CFM numbers and support higher horsepower.

I believe K&N makes one exactly like that, hence the statement on their website... "These filters are NOT designed, manufactured, nor distributed by K&N"

FUCK THAT! REDICULIOUS, selling fuckin' APC filters for $50+ bucks, my ass! I would buy a AutoZone cone filter if you ask me, $12 bucks... then do a 3" inch retrofit like I did... it all comes down to fiber type, cleaning requirements, and filtering capabilitys. Oil-impregnated filters will work fine, and require little matinence to keep in working order.
Here is an example when I used the 3" filter and coupled it down this was one hell of a bitch to do properly.
I had to go down to Midas and get one of the dudes to let me grab some metal-tube from the trash bin, in the 3" size. I then managed to get my hands on a 3" to 2 1/2" coupler. You slide the 3 inch piece into the cone filter's rubberfitting, then you slip the 2 1/2" coupler over it and bolt that motherfucker down as hard as you can!!! You then connect the other end of the coupler (the 2 1/2" side of course) down to your previously prepped-piece of mandrel bent tubing.
For future refrance for anyone looking to build their own CAI, be sure that you go here to order your mandrel-bent tubing:

Everyone and their grandma makes that EXACT TYPE OF FILTER, damn you quick poster you, beat me out again!
I did the 3" retrofit, but I never said shit about buying an autozone filter! That is a filter that I picked up at Shell Happy Motorsports for $10 bucks.
The basis for my ASSumption is that the design IS ESSENTIALLY THE EXACT SAME AS EVERYOTHER BRAND'S FILTER!
YOU WANNA TRY AND EXPLAIN TO ME THEN WHY THAT FILTER IS ANY BETTER THAN ONE I COULD PICK UP AT AUTOZONE?
Don't encourage others to get ripped off dude, and what evidence do you have to base your statement off?

its not abotu getting ripped off. The reason why i recommend that filter is because
1) It is flow bench tested (although this can be taken with varying degrees of confidence)
2) It is a very well repected filter in the 3000gt community.
3) It is used and very well respected among LS1 cars.
Those three things would lead me to have a little bit more confidence in this filter over an autozone one.
Now if you're on a budget then go for the autozone one, but if you're willing to spend a fair amount on a filter then i would suggest the powerstack. So its not about getting ripped off. I'm just suggesting to big_p a different option. He's obviously willing to go the extra mile for performance if he wants to make his own CAI I thought he might be wiling to spend a decent amount on a filter. I'm making no profit off of this and was just trying to give him another option, but i guess thats not what the forums are for.
