Can you California-ize a car?

Let's say you have a car following federal emission standards. First off, if you live in a state without yearly or bi-yearly inspection, you probably don't keep up with various emissions-related maintenance or repair anyway.

So now let's say you wanna move to California, or another state following California emissions standards, or whatever you wanna call it.

Are there shops there that will do the necessary replacements/adjustments to make your car legal? Is it super expensive and not worth the money at all? Do some shops just take bribes to pass you?

Cali doesn't have yearly inspections as other states do. All you need to do is to pass smog bi-yearly. When you register your car in Cali, you'll need to do that smog check and then you'll need to get one every other year. Just make sure your car can pass smog and you'll be fine.

When you move in, you will have to register with DMV and they will ask you to submit a smog report. They will most likely send you to a "smog only" station which cost more (around 50 dollars). When you "smog" your car the mechanic will enter the car's origin maker (so no modification is necessary).

Good luck and welcome to California,

Sam

They will make sure that the car can passed whatever emission standard that on the hood/Door jam. (IE Federal or CA). You will see them enter which emission standard it has to passed.

There we go! That's what I was looking for.

And no, I'm not moving to California. It was just more of a thought. =)
