R&R Head Gasket on a 2AZ-FE is 18 Hours???

I just purchased an '02 Toyota with a 2AZ-FE, on the drive home 2 hours after test driving the car began to overheat. I pulled over and checked, the radiator was empty. This morning I started the car a big cloud of white smoke

I called a mechanic cause the car has all the symptoms of a bad head gasket and he quoted me 18.1 hours to R&R the head, is that correct?

It's a 2AZ-FE but cant find the R&R head gasket info anywhere, Thank you in advance.

You just bought it? If so return it. That could be more than a gasket. An yes lots of white smoke is coolant in the engine. I have never done a gasket on that engine. So I cannot comment on time.

Understand that Book times allow for problems and return issues. It is a reliable way to let honest garages make a decent living with some return issues. So times well over a proper book time should be an issue.

He might be looking at additional work, you need to ask.

But again if you just bought it???

I got the car for a decent deal from a young couple who just had a first baby 3mos ago, the 20-22 year old father was only selling the car because they need a four door because the mother's car was reposessed when she quit working because of the pregnancy.

I can't for sure determine whether the empty radiator was already a sign of a bad head gasket or if I over-drove the car and caused the gasket to fail.

Either way, I dont have the heart to give them back a useless car when I know there's a slight chance it could be my fault.

I've been blessed enough to have a GS, LS, LX, the $600 repair is not going to break me.

I just want them to have the best of luck in thier new family, I know how scary it was for me with my first.

I am humbled, you are a very decent human being. I hope it is only a head gasket. I also hope they are not taking advantage of such a fine person.

Thank you both, I'm hoping to get it fixed with a Time-sert kit but cant see spending $400 on tooling I'll never use again. I'm hoping to find a member who's willing to rent their kit but no luck so far
