Sharp looking rims.

As for tire size, it depends on whether you have a 4cyl or a V6 and whether you want to focus on looks or on performance.

Probably looks more than preformance (with a 5sfe I'm not going anywhere fast 8 P) but comfort and price are both important.

Go here http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and put in your stock tire size and then you can play with the upsizes. keep the overall diameter as close to stock as possible (within a few tenths of an inch... +/- 0.2" or so).

That will give you the optimal sizes at each diameter/ratio.

Right now I think I'm choosing between 225/40, 215/45, and 225/45, which do you think would be the best choice?

If you are all about looks you would want wider and lower profile, so 225/40 would be your best choice out of those 3.

for 225/40 will they hit the wheel well in a turn though? They seem like they'd be a lot wider.

Nope it should be fine if the rims are the right offset.
