It's recommended nowadays that all 4 wheels have snows, especially for front drive, since the much greater traction on the front can cause braking and handling problems. Back in the 1980s, I had an experience with a front drive car with snows only in the front. I had to watch out when cornering in snow as the the front would hang on and the rear(non snows) would tend to swing out, had to corner very slow in snow. Also one day driving in a snowstorm and was coasting when the rear end decided to swap ends with the front. Back then, snow tires were only recommended for the 2 driving wheels.
