Was I ripped off?

My 2000 Camry 4 cylinder's heater fan was working only on the highest setting. It did not work on the medium or low settings. Given the cold climate, I brought my car to a new shop.

The store charged my $77.50 for a new blower motor resistor and $43 for labor. Total cost was $120.

Now that I'm back, from Googling the part, most online auto stores charge $30-40 for a blower motor resistor for the Camry.

Question to you guys: was I ripped off? Is this something I should complain about to the shop?

IMO, no. It doesn't matter who is selling you what--a clothing retailer, a plumber, auto mechanic, whoever--they will always sell you the part/item at a markup. Next time what you can do is buy the part yourself and have the mechanic install it. I do that all the time, and it saves money. If the mechanic had charged you three or four times the part's price, then I'd say you'd have real reason to complain to them.

BTW, to Toyota Nation!

By the way, I just moved to the Wilmington, Delaware area. If anybody can recommend an honest mechanic, I'd appreciate it.

That is one of the reasons that so many buy a Haynes or Chiltons guide and DIY. Start with small easy jobs.
Switched that part in an older Nissan, it was a joke. Unsrew lower panel unsrew & unplug part, replace & reassemble. Wash up and go out for Dinner with the winnings.

I was going by the quote in your original post that said $30-$40 for the part. Still, in the scheme of life it's not that big a deal, and like you said mark it down to a lesson learned and do it differently in the future. BTW, if you don't get any responses about a mechanic in your area then I'd suggest posting a new thread in the General Discussion forum and ask the same thing. A lot more people read that forum and may respond.

You got off cheap. The part + 30 minutes labor. Nothing to complain about, at least I wouldn't be upset. My opinion is the shop is reputable.

They may have used an OEM part which might be priced higher than an aftermarket part you may have seem. There are too many variables to determine if the price was fair or not.
