Welcome all. I have a 96 Camry 2.2 liter that I was looking to upgrading the muffler on. I've searched a few pages on the forum and haven't found anything too definitive. Any ideas from anyone on what I can go after?

Thanks

the more free flowing the exhaust the better performance you will get, to a point. it also has been known to change your power band so be aware of that. someone correct me if Im wrong, but I'm under the impression that back pressure helps low end power, but free flowing, low back pressure helps the power at the top end of the tach.

He said he wants a "muffler" not cat-back. That's why I asked if he is after sound or power.

As for the cat-back, a properly designed one will give you gains all through the powerband (like mine did)... worst case it will keep the power the same as before on low end. A poorly designed one would give you low end loss due to backpressure or lack thereof.

For a 4cyl 2.25" cat-back is ideal. But you could experiment between that and a 2.5" just for the hell of it to see the difference.

Well, I'm just after the muffler. As far as what I need it to do, I need it more for power than sound. I would like something that gives me a bit more acceleration thus low-end torque correct? If anyone has any ideas, could you point me to a maker, or a website. I saw that jegs.com has some cheap, universal mufflers, but I don't know how they would do on my Camry.

A muffler upgrade alone will give you nothing. If power is what you are after, a well designed cat-back is the least amount of exhaust work you need done. You could do a full exhaust and get headers and downpipe too and that should give you about +15HP right across the powerband if designed well.

Thanks man. So headers, catback and muffler. That should run about 3-400$US correct? Any ideas on where I could purchase things from? Should I call a muffler place and ask how good they are at customizing ?

Double that estimate at a minimum. Plus you have to look into labour. You might want to see if there are any recommended performance shops around your area. Where are you from?

The cat-back exhaust system is the way to go...Make sure you stay close to the 2.25-2.5 interval because as said earlier you could lose low-end torque...Never replace just the muffler for power because you hurt your car and don't ever get any gains....15 HP is modest since horsepower is only based on how much your enginne can put out...You will always have the HP jsut depends on when it gets used with what parts...Headers are not that cheap so for the whole system it would probably cost like 800-1000 bucks...good luck

Thanks budking. I think that I'll lay low on the muffler then, until I can afford the catback and everything. I'm looking to get some wheels right now with some Nitto tires.
