1986 vs 1985

Last august, i bought what I was told was a 1986 toyota camry.

i have 2 quick questions :

1. do they have the same engines (i dont think they do)

2. are the front brakes between the two (more specifically the rotors) interchangable with one another? (otherwise I may have to change them)

when I got the car, there was no sticker on the inside of the drivers side door with a birth date. and later in the vehicles life, it was involed in a front end collision.... which means no sticker under the hood either.

It is my understanding that you can tell the year of the car by the vin, but im not sure which numbers they are. Just recently i started performing work on this car because i was tired of gettign raped elsewhere or work I could do myself.

Thankyou very much for any answers you may have

1. Yes, both are powered by the SOHC 2S-E engine

should be the same. gen1 spans from 82-86 and any mid year changes would have occured between 84 and 85

The "l" in 2s-le stands for inline.

In your case its a I4 or inline 4.

Bluemeanie- the gen1 freshening was in 85, you can tell b/c there's composite lights up front and not sealed-beams (they had two per side). Interesting trivia, those gen1 Camrys could be had with turbodiesels!

foompla no problem with the help, welcome to TN

Pop the hood and you should be able to figure out what engine you have. Also i find Msn autos very good because you can compare multiple cars. side by side
