Alright, so it was a code "63 - No. 2 Shift Solenoid short-circuit". I checked out the harness and found the connector to be dislodged, so i cleaned and reconnected it, but I'm still getting the same error code and symptoms (not shifting to 3rd gear). Anyone know 'bout how much it would be to replace/repair the solenoid? Plus, where the heck is it?!? I looked it up on the Haynes manual and it seems that its behind the fender liner on the driver's side, but I'm not sure...

Quote (example, for A541E):
...The ECT ECU receives information from various input devices
and uses this information to control No. 1 and No. 2 shift solenoids on transmission valve body for transmission shifting and lock-up solenoid for torque converter lock-up...
... ECT ECU OUTPUT DEVICES
No. 1 & 2 Solenoids
The ECT ECU controls transmission shifting by delivering an
output signal to operate proper solenoid. Solenoids are located on transmission valve body. See Fig. N. Solenoids are operated in
accordance with shift lever position. See Fig. N. If a solenoid
malfunctions, fail safe selected gear may result.
NOTE: In some gears, ECT ECU provides a fail-safe system which
will place transmission in designated gear depending on
solenoid failure.
Lock-Up Solenoid
The ECT ECU controls torque converter lock-up by delivering
an output signal to lock-up solenoid. Lock-up solenoid is activated
when shift lever is in "D" position and vehicle is at specified speed. Lock-up solenoid is located on transmission valve body. See Fig.NN (Determining No. 1 & No. 2 Solenoid Operation
Courtesy of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.)...
...ECT ECU
The ECT ECU receives information from various input devices
and uses this information to control No. 1 and 2 solenoids on
transmission valve body for transmission shifting and lock-up solenoid for torque converter lock-up...
CODES "SHIFT SOLENOIDNO. 2 FAULT"
...Remove and inspect operation of solenoids. If solenoids are o'k, inspect valve body...
Circuit Description
The ECT ECU uses signal from direct clutch revolution sensor and vehicle speed sensor to determine actual gear position. ECT ECU
compares actual gear with shift schedule in memory to detect
mechanical trouble of shift solenoid valves and/or valve body. Code is
set if during normal driving gear required by ECT ECU does not match actual gear after 2 trips have been completed...

Robert,

Take a look "Limp-mode" description (if on A/T A541E No.2 solenoid malfunction, "no 3rd" and read SAE DTC P0755) in http://www.alflash.narod.ru/images/541E.gif

Hope this help,
