1. Vacuum lines. There ought to be a diagram of how your vacuum lines go, you will need to know which part is which naturally, find the diagram probably a haynes manual or you may even need the toyota factory manual.
2. Since it ran before you did all the work, what was it that got put back on wrong during the valve job?
-double check that your timing belt is on correctly. The marks could be one or more teeth off and this is enough to make the engine run wrong.
-route the vacuum hoses, replace any that are cracked and possibly leaking
-check that everything electrical got hooked up, and hooked up correctly.
-check that no wires were pinched by all the work in the engine bay.
-is the distributor in right? I did an in car overhaul on another car and it wouldnt start - until i found i had put the distributor in backwards.
-We did an engine replacement on my dad's old truck. Started and run fine. Congratulated ourselves, went and had lunch, came back out and started it, and it ran like crap! I checked everything and could not figure it out - until we took it to a really sharp mechanic, who diagno0sed the igniton switch! (The switch was worn enough that it would allow full voltage to the ignition system sometimes but if it was a fraction of a millimeter off - only partial voltage!
-Maybe you need more information than you are going to find on an internet forum. I recommend a factory manual, the toyota manuals are excellent and have step by step troubleshooting. There used to be stickies for pdf reprint of the factory manuals here. Assuming they'd be gone one day, i downloaded, printed and copied mine to CD long ago
