Anti-squeal on brake pads...

So today my dad's friend came over to help install the front brake pads and rotors for our 97 camry LE. I learned a lot just from watching so that next time I can do it myself with no problems. Now I have heard that when putting anti-squeal grease onto the pads, it should only be on the shims and on the back side of the brake pad, not on the side of the pads facing the rotor. But my dad's friend just smeared it on the pads facing the rotor and placed them back in, touching the rotor. We put in brembo blank discs with OEM brake pads and installation was a breeze except for this bolt that had a spring pushing it out so I had to squeeze it back in before I could tighten down the caliper. Also, he left the caliper hanging by the brake line and I was starting to turn a few shades blue because I learned that there should not be any stress on the brake lines. I suggested him to tie up the caliper so that it would be supported by a zip tie but he said it was fine. My dad's friend is a handy man and he knows a few things or two but I'm not sure about the steps he took when installing the brakes. After it was done, we took it for a ride and everything seemed fine. There were no squeaking sounds or anything, just a little burning smell from the brake pads beginning it's break in process. BTW, can someone tell me how to properly break in the pads and let me know if there's anything I should be worried about from what my dad's friend did. Thanks you guys rock.

You dont want any brake lubricant on the part surface itself it goes on the back of the pad. also the hardware should be replaced (metal shims the pads slides on) or at least cleaned and lubed. the caliper guide bolts should be lubed as well. if the anti squeel stuff your talking about is a spray or an actual anti squeel it should be ok. for break in you should take the car to 45mph and slow down to 5mph pretty quick. do that 4-5 times. During this first break in dont stop the car all the way until youve done 4 to 5 hard stops. this is the way i was tought and it works pretty well for me. im using akebono pro-act ceramic with oe japan supra tt front slotted rotors.

the grease should have been put between the shims, and the pads, and also the calipers.....but not between the pad and the rotors tho.....

but for real, it won't make a diff tho...the grease'll burn off after a couple of hard stops anyway

and tho grease and all the cleaning sprays do work for getting rid of small squeaks and the like, if you see any rust on the shims, then you should replace them, cuz they're called anti-squale kits for a reason

Thanks for all the good info. I will take apart the front brakes next week and clean them up pretty well with brake cleaner and make sure the caliper, shims, and back of pad are lubed properly.

Hey before you do so, what type of discbrake anti squeel did he use??

if it is a silver paste, or copper paste, leave it. It is the same stuff called brake finishing spray, antisieze compound that will bed into the pores of the pad and rotor surface and break it in with out squeaks.

If the spray or equivelent wasn't used the plant where I used to work at could have customers complain as they ar breaking in the new pads and rotors or drums, even after a PDI check by the Stealer... Good Stealerships use it too, if they are not cheap!!

If it is the blue paste, white or clear gel stuff like silicone paste, well it would have clumped by now and you'll just spray brake cleaner to get it off, no sense in disassembly. Remember to use a catch can!!

Is there certain kind of anti-squeal grease that you guys are using? Or will just any grease do?

The kind I used was a blue sticky anti squeal which I bought at Kragens. It came in a pack of 2 small pouches and cost about $5. I believe the brand is Permatex or something like that.

I just replaced my pads by myself for the first time, and I got some of that orange silicone "brake quiet" paste stuff to apply to the back of my brake pads. Well, like an idiot I applied paste to like the entire back of the pad and now that my wheels are back on, when I look through my rims I see that ugly orange paste on my pads, staring me in my face. I think I put on too much and now when I touch it, it's like rubber.

How can I get this stuff off? Is there anything that I can do to hide that ugly orange crap on my pads. Any ideas?

^ Remove the pads, spray em with brake parts cleaner, reapply brake quiet goop, and reinstall pads.
