Your dad is right. Listen to him and take what he has to say into consideration.

Unless you've got money, time and resources to maintain the car, do little things or do mods that can be transplanted (ie. audio).

Why don't you have the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic and get a report on how the car is doing in general. Do compression and leak down tests, look for oil leaks, check condition of body for rust. If the health of the car is questionable, focus on your audio or save towards your next car. If your engine healthy and you really want to keep the car, then do mods that are two fold...address the failed or ailing part while adding performance. For example, replace worn suspension with firmer struts and lowering springs. If your brakes are shot, get slotted rotors with performance pads.

This was the approach I tried to use. As you can see, I'm a hipocrite. I SC'd, kitted and slammed my car within 3 months of getting it. Do as I say and not as I do

this would be a tough decision, but for real, if you really like your car, then by all means keep it and spend spend spend....

remember that tho it may cost a good bit to fix, when it comes to engine, it wouldn't cost too much to just drop a low-mileage 5sfe in place of your original one, then I'm sure that could fix most things in one shot

Who pays for maintenance? If it's your dad, then I'd say you should be considerate towards him and not invest so much on things that will be useless if the car breaks down. If you're paying for everything, it's just a matter of how dedicated you are to your car. If you're willing to fix (and/or pay for) any hiccups in the engine's health along the way, by all means go for it. Otherwise, start looking into a younger car.

i would say do what you want. either you buy a newer car which costs more money of keep your car and keep it up which still costs money so either way its gonna cost you money. I guess it comes down to how much you like that car and if there is somthing else you would rather have.

Any car, new or old, has the potential to break. Your car obviously is going to be more prone to it due to high mileage, but really the way you should look at it is this: given what you know about the car and what could potentially go wrong due to its age, is it still worth it to you? If so, go for it, just be aware of what's going on with the car and check odd noises/weird behavior out as soon as it happens.

Keep the age of the car in mind when you do your modifications, but really when you think about it that's what anyone should be doing. Any performance upgrade you make shouldn't be thrown on without first considering what it's going to do to the car.

My suggestion would be to set aside extra "safety" money along with your upgrade money. Don't ever spend this money, but keep it in a separate, safe place for the emergency situation where you blow a headgasket, throw a rod, or even some other thing dies just because it's got a lot of miles on it.
