I tried using led lights in my tail lights, and they didn't work. I got 'em off of e-bay, and the connection between the bulb and the socket didn't seem to work right. They were the right size...
I painted my amber signals on the back w/Testors "transparent candy apple red" paint, so now the whole tail light (except reverse lense) is red. This keeps them legal, with a slightly different look. I used the black tint on my Civic tail lenses. They looked pretty good, but they were noticably dimmer, and definetly not legal. You could try the GTS covers, if they make 'em for the 3rd Gen, and that way you could take them off come inspection time if needed.
