I know it has been asked before, and I've read.
But I'm still unclear on somethings, so I'm just going to ask it outright:
I have a '93 Camry LE without anti-lock brakes. It has an 5SFE in it, if that matters, too.
I'm wondering what brakes I need?
When I just got my 2 new front axles, the shop said in about 3 months I'll need brakes, so I'm figuring why not just upgrade instead of maintaining?
Specifc part being "Brembo (92-99) 2WD 4 Cyl (Front)"
Would this be what I need? Also, would this just be front brakes, or would it include rear brakes as well?
I'm fairly new to the whole car thing, and am just a bit confused with the whole thing.
From what I've read, I'm assuming my car doesn't have rear discs.
Im using akebono pro-act ceramic pads. ive got almost 18k and they still look like new. Or use dealer pads. I wouldnt rec. using ebc's, those wore out on my car in 4k miles. Ive never seen those brembo pads before, they might work good though. Ive heard good things about the hawk and porterfield pads. Just dont use raybestos or a semi-metallic pad. The dealer pads are 45 bucks and they work pretty good. Im sticking with akebono.
don'tr know many ppl who use brembo pads, but a good number of ppl (including myself) use kvr pads.....last decently long, and pretty good stopping power......
only complaint that some have had were about squealing at times

Originally posted by EKam If you don't see a shiny silver disc on the back with a caliper on it (looks the same on the front, only smaller), then you don't have rear disc.
Originally posted by CrawlingEye I got that much, Ekam. One thing though, how would I see this? I don't have rims, just steelies with caps.
I was more-so asking if there's any rule of thumb, like say, a gen3 without anti-lock would have all drums, or whatever.
This may sound silly, but if I don't have rear discs, do I have rear brakes?
Thanks.
If you have to ask this, I'd say go to a mechanic Of course, I can't tell if you are joking or sincerely trying to find-out...
Assume you're the second.
Your mechanic, when changing the axels, probably referred to the front brake pads. Ask him if he checked the rear aswell....
If you don't want to ask a mechanic and need to find on your own - take off the plastic cover on one of the back wheels, look through the holes on your steeles - if you see a disk like you see in the front, you got disk brakes. If not - drums. In which case you should get shoes rather than pads - just don't go in the shoe store for them
Or take a pic, post here, and we'll tell ya!
Btw, if you follow this link, down at the bottom (at least bottom for now, from 7-7-03), you will see two pictures - one with my new disk brakes (top), the other with the old drum brakes (bottom). In this rare instance, my car had three disk brakes and one drum brake for a weekend, till I got around to change the fourth over to a disk... Hint - the disk brake is shiny ...
you dont want to even consider changing your own brake pads if you dont know what you need....!!
honestly now... there is a lot of work needed to change brake pads. its not THAT simple... i'd rather change struts than brake pads, personally. they are not easy. you need a jack, lug wrench, 17?mm socket for the calipers, a big C clamp to compress the piston to install it back on, and you need to know how it all goes back together once it is taken off.
as far as what you need, you need brake pads for the front only, 92-99 4cylinder. and you need to learn how to do this before attempting it on a car that you need to drive every day... what happens when you dont know how to do it? call a tow truck to tow your ass to the mechanic where it should be in the first place?
^ now that's the strangest thing I've ever heard.......changing struts are a pain.....two things that you need that ppl don't all have is a spring compressor, and an impact gun to make it all easy.....
brakes.....just a wrench and the c-clamp
