timing belt

My 2000 Camry Le has thrown it's timing belt, does anyone know how to find the top dead center once the belt has broken?

1. you will need a large breaker bar plus a big socket to turn the crank, and another to turn the camshaft pulley. The camshaft is 17mm socket, crankshaft is 22 mm socket (i think).

2. Remove crankshaft pulley and the covers. here is a link on how to do it, that is probably about what you need

My Timing belt change (very detailed, pics) Gen 4

(Your camry is non-interferance which means you can turn the crank without worrying about the pistons mashing the valves.)

3. You will need a compression tester that screws into the spark plug hole. Harborfreight.com has some cheap ones.
Alternatively you can rig some way to determine when you are getting compression on #1 cylinder. Stuffing something in the hole, and holding it down while having someone crank the engine, and so that you can feel when #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. I don't have any bright ideas on how best to do that.

4. Screw in your compression tester into #1 spark plug hole (the one closest to the front of engine, that is, the pulley side)

5. turn crankshaft until the mark on the crank aligns with the mark on the engine. Check the reading on the tester. If no reading, you are not at tdc, so turn the crank exactly one more turn til the mark lines up again.

6. Now you have GOT to have a compression reading (because hopefully nothing inside the engine is broken) so now you know you are at tdc.

7. Use the 17 mm wrench to turn the camshaft pulley til it's mark (usually a dimple or dot) aligns with the mark on the engine.

8. Do the remaining steps to install your timing belt.
