How can I make a cold air intake? Straight pipe from the tubing to the outside duct?
Inside the fender-well is a good idea. Just pull out all the stock "ducts" that are there and run your piping toward the front of the bumper where it will get cold air from the existing hole in the bumper.
Is it possible to just take off the stock air box and replace it with a cold air "cone" filter? If so, what type of gadget would you use to secure it in there, a metal band or what not? My friend said he welding a new temperture sensor in when he put his CAI in, is that necessary? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just want to take my Camry to the max.

Slapping a cone filter where the stock airbox is will not make it a cold air intake. It will only suck in hot air from the engine bay. Cold air needs to be sucked in from elsewhere such as the fender well or openings in the bumper or grill.
However there is argument as to the performance gains from short ram vs. CAIs and whether they are that significant, but most will tell you that a CAI is a smarter idea for true performance.

Did you sell that cold air intake....
No.
I wanted to use it with the turbo but, things didn't work out so I yanked it out.
I used some of the piping from the CAI to make the pipe that goes from the compressor discharge on the turbo to the throttle body.
The filter (K&N) that was on it is now on Joe's (karma) gf's Corolla. I wanted to use it but, it wouldn't fit onto the AFM adapter. The filter has a 2.5" inlet and the AFM adapter has a 2.75" inlet. No biggy cos i'll just order a K&N filter with a 2.75" inlet from Summit Racing.

on the pipe in the engine compartment there is a piece of metal...what is that?
