stains (prevention and cleanup)

Ok I ran a search but had additional questions and didnt think it would be looked well upon to necro an ancient thread.

So I bought a 2010 Camry but didn't opt for the extortion on the "fabric protection" ($165). So now I need to figure out what I should do with the car as far as stains go. Do I scotchgard the seats (I have one child thats only 10 mo. old that will go in the back seat) or do I simply spot remove any issues.

I know there are two camps for this so if you could give advice on:

1) How to scotchgard. Do I just spray, or do I need to keep it off of the vinyl and plastic. Do I need to scrim off areas while spraying? Will it ruin anything if I get it on anything else. etc.

2) What kind of spot remover do you use. Does anyone use their steam cleaner on the car periodically?

What are you asking? You have a baby and you want chemicals in that car? An how about you and your wife? Just keep it clean. Don't drink in it or eat in it, and avoid dirty cloths. Vacuum and wash it. Chemicals are the easy way out. Keep pets out of it. Common sense?

ok... obviously you fall under the spot clean category. I think I am leaning that way anyway. We have a bissel spot bot and hopefully that will suffice.
