Shifting to #2 while driving?

So...i'm rolling down a descending (declining?) road and I'm gaining momentum and the car begins to move faster...I know I shouldn't ride the brake, engine braking is losing its battle against physics...is it OK to shift from D to 2 while in motion? is it...bad for the transmission?

Do it in steps and try to anticipate when you need to do this before you NEED it.
On my 2009 it won't let you shift at too high of a speed and just beeps at you until you slow down to the right speed.

Should be fine as long as youre not going over 60 MPH or so.

I have no idea what it is. I assume it's around 30 MPH for L and 60 MPH for 2.

For my car in 2nd gear, the RPM / 100 is my speed in MPH and about half that for first...I have a manual though.

Never bothered to look as I was on a twisty mountain road.
Forgot to mention mine is the 6 speed. You can't shift at too high a speed since it won't let you so just try it and see.
The owners manual might have the speeds listed.

Is it alright to deactivate O/D when going downhill in addition to downshifting?

OD just takes you out of your highest gears, in your case the two highest maybe. So in going down to 3 or 2, you circumvented OD.

Yes, most definitely save your brakes on the long descents.
