I'm starting to think...

That my Camry isn't "really" an All-Trac.

Now talisman said I get under the car and see if the front is connected with the back. I did that but I can't see if it is or isn't because of the plating coverage over everything except the exhaust piping. So it has plating on the underside, that would make sense if it was AWD, since you could do some slim off-roading and less pebble apocalypse would happen to the underside. I've heard All-Trac cam's come with 4 disc brakes, well mine only came with 2 front disc brakes and 2 rear drum brakes, like a FWD car, so maybe that was just a package? The cam also feels pretty darn light for "all-trac's being very heavy and boat-ish." My manual too, says All-Trac. Really though I've looked through the paperwork with the car and have found nothing All-Trac. I don't really know enough about the All-Trac cam's to really notice anything right away (or know where to look) for things that might stand out and say All-Trac.

Does anyone know a justified way to find out if it really is?

I'm thinking maybe VIN search/history, that would prob just give me the work history etc, ehh maybe more?

Gen 2 All-Trac is SV25.

So somewhere in the VIN it should say SV25.

Easy way to discover awd or not...

Just go out onto the street and drop the clutch at like 4k. If you're awd, it'll launch with no wheelspin. if it's only 2 wheel drive, you'll spin the shit outta the tires.

If automatic, just put hte pedal straight to the floor from a stop.

...or just look at the rear suspension. If there's any sort of axle connecting to the rear wheels its an all-trac.

OMG! This whole time I thought it was an All-Trac and it really isn't, hah. The guy I bought it from said All-Trac, the manual says in big black bold letters All-Trac. Drove pretty well off-road, and seemed to handle ok. So I assumed, silly me, that is was indeed AWD. Who would buy a replacement AWD manual for a FWD car?!?!

The VIN says SV21, the bay says SV21.

Looks like I was bonkers on this one

GREAT! This means I have so many more options open to me for customization, such a freakin' lowering springs, thank god.

Hmmmmmm. You might also have a great fraud/misrepresentation complaint, depending upon who sold you the car, and how the transaction went down. And how on earth did an AWD manual get paired off with a non-AWD car? If you're happy with what you've got, great, then the old "no harm -- no foul" concept would seem to apply. If you really wanted (and paid for) AWD, then maybe it's time to talk with the seller, a lawyer, or both. Of course, with all due respect, there might also be a tad bit of reciprocal fault here too. This reminds me of the "V-6" case from a while back where the buyer involved got a little upset when he drove home and discovered that the only V-6 associated with his new car was the chrome emblem on the trunk! My first thought was, "why didn't he look under the hood first???" You never looked underneath?

The manual for the All-Trac was combined into the regular camry manual. The way the front cover is printed could easily confuse anyone.

Also, the easiest way to tell if your Camry is an All-Trac is to look inside. The controls and display for the system should be fairly obvious. All-Tracs also have the 4WD emblems on both the front and back.

Some examples:

Manual: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2470111673

Actual All-Trac:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2471410847
(Look at the interior shot. You can see the 4wd display on the dashboard in front of the passenger seat.)

Seller thought it was an All-Trac due to the manual:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2470827439

I think this mistake might be more common than you think. There's another red camry being sold on eBay as an All-Trac, but its being an All-Trac is slightly questionable.

Negative. Not enough torque to break the wheels loose on an SV21. Not until about 4k. You would have to shift into neutral first and then drop it into drive.

Maybe a V6 could do it, but I think you'd have to rev it up first.

Negative. I can do it without a neutral drop, couple times now without reving it up some. For a complete burn out session though, yea have to drop into neutral.

They put model numbers in VINs???

That would mean Gen 3 L4s would be SK11 models, not SV or SXVs?

They did on the gen 2's. Not sure about the other gen's.

My VIN starts with JT2SV22. SV22 is gen 2 LE model.

SV21 is base model and DX model.

SV25 is all trac.
