Auto Tranny Adjustments

My 97 Camry's auto feels slightly jerky when it shifts. Are there adjustments the mechanic can make to make it smoother? Thx. Is there anything I can do to smooth out the shift?

Flush your tranny fluid might help, when was the last time you did it?

And cold tranny could be one of the causes if you don't warm up your car before you leave the driveway.

Hey bro, follow ekam's advice and do a tranny flush, but also fill your tranny with synthetic atf cause i've noticed quite a big difference between synthetic and organic atf. It's way smoother, even when cold. The only thing that sucks about synthetic atf is that its way more expensive, but if you're gonna change the fluid yourself then its not that bad, like 18 bucks for the whole job.

I've been wanting to flush mine recently, what kind of synthetic ATF fluid is the best? Redline?

^ Redline is the best out there IMO, many here use it.

Both Redline and Amsoil boast some pretty impressive stats for their synthetic ATFs. Redline is formulated off of a polyester base, while Amsoil is a polyalphaolefin (PAO) product, so if you have a reason for preferring one basestock over another, that may be a factor.

Here's a biggie, though (at least for those of us who have Camrys that require the use of Toyota Type-IV ATF): Redline is quite clear that none of their fluids are Type-IV compatible. They would NOT tell me whether they said this for true technical reasons, or as a legal cover. Amsoil, on the other hand, certifies that their syn ATF will work well (and safely) in all Type-IV applications, and their product warranty will apply if their ATF is used in a Type-IV car.

In my year-old, 32k mile V-6 Camry, I had been experiencing some mild shudder on the factory fluid (as described in another TN thread). As an intermediate step (before going syn), I just had the local dealer do a full evacuation/flush with T-IV, to see if fluid age was an issue. Presto, shudder gone!!! Obviously then, 30k is too far with Type-IV (at least in a hot southern climate), although mine was barely discolored and smelled fine. I'll drive it another 10k miles to let it fully dissolve any crud that may be in there, and then do it again with Amsoil.

I'd like to see that too.

I notice my camry's tranny has 2 drain plug holes. Makes it much easier! (no need to drop the pan!)

So alot of people been using redline even though its incompatible? I have a 97 camry v6. Won't it hurt performance or anything like that or even longevity if incompatible stuff is used?

Awesome.

I agree with the guy who uses cheap stuff but changes it often.

Make sure there is a magnet in the pan.

I'm thinking for my tranny (which has 175,00 miles on it) i'll just withdraw the fluid out and then put in the new reldine atf (couled with a cooler) and run that for about 20,000 miles and then afer that do a full tranny flush and put in redline atf again. I know that this means the atf will ikely wear quicker because it will eb mixing with some of the left over tranny fluid that is in teh torque converter but I think if i just did the tranny flush adn went right to the atf it would probable have some ill efects.

What do you guys think
