Yet another bad mpg thread!!!

Aight I have a '95 Camry LE...I just hit 60,000 miles...I've been putting in '93 octane for about a year now, but from a no name gas place (Valero)...and I find it tough to reach even 200 miles to a tank. I rarely do highway driving so it's usually all stop-n-go driving on/off on/off. I don't really beat on my car but i'm not a "slow" driver. I've seen these threads about how people have even gotten 27mpg. I don't know how many mpg i'm getting, but it has to be bad if I can a little over 200 miles to a tank. Any suggestions???

My suggestions to fix your car are
1. Tuneup
2. Check air pressure in tires
3. Change air filter
4. Take the dead bodies out of the trunk, extra weight doesn't help gas mileage

I have a 2000 Camry with an auto trans and a V6. From the day it was new until about 27,000 I consistently averaged 18mpg. That was with about 60% of my driving done on the freeway. At 27,000 I went from the stock 15 inch tires to 215/55/16's and for some reason I started getting about 20mpg. Go figure! At 36,000 I had the 30,000 mile service done. All of the fluids were changed and the injectors were cleaned. Since having that service performed I now average 22mpg. I use 92 octane gas.

With such a hich consumption I would start wondering serious questions before you start to dammage the engin : too much fuel (to a certain extend) could possible blow your piston rings. This does happen with diesel engines since fuel pressure is extremely high on these engines.
I would do a total check up : first smaller things : air filter, check spark plugs, change them if necessary (even if I don"t think this should be the problem), have your 4 injectors cleaned and tested, if they are ok, check your map sensor, and after that the ecu. In fact it would be a better idea to go for a diagnose so that they could give a (possible) more direct idea of what is going on.

Good luck !

Yeah I say check the air filter or just get a tune-up. That shoud at least help some.

My gosh, people my 2000 CE 5speed gets about 35 mpg. From the full tank i get around 500 to 550 miles on AVERAGE. All you guys should slow it down.... what's the point of harsh acceleration anyways? you'll all catch up when you meet at the next light...

375-425 miles per tank

i have a 98 camry le with 38,000 miles that gets about 375-425 miles per tank, dependinging on how i drive it. sucks that i only use it for a summer car though, because the car i drove during the winter got roughly 200 miles per tank. almost thought i was gonna be able to take it out, the roads were clear with no salt. fat chance mother nature gave us another 2 inches and state trucks dropped salt.

I don't think harsh acceleration might explain such a high consumption on these camry's. They are supposed to have a relatively quite regular consumption no matter the way you drive. I do think that 200 miles / tank on such an engine means that there is a serious problem

Thanks for the info...but on a scale of 1-10 of car knowledge i'm at about a -2 lol so i'll probably just get a tune up when I get some money. But since i'm at 60K miles do I get my 60,000 mile service or a tune up or is whats done with a tune up done within the 60k mile service??

my first guess is that the gas youre getting from that no name place is not very high quality... stick to the name brand stuff so you know youre getting good fuel. try getting your gas elsewhere a couple times and see how you do. if that doesnt work, its time for a tuneup my friend.
What brand of gas do you guys recommend??? Mobile, Sunoco, BP, Getty.....and do you suggest I keep it 93 octane??

and again thank you everyone for you info and comments...

Can we stop talking about xxx mi. to the tank please? It's quite misleading considering a person might quote a full tank figure when tank is actually 3/4 empty, or the fact that someone may have a 12 gal. tank vs. 16 gal. tank. It's more consistent and correct if everyone just took mileage between fillup (i.e. 260 miles), and divided it by number of gallons filled (i.e. 12.5 gal.).

I've been averaging 21 mpg on my auto I4 70% city, 30% highway. Rather disappointing.
