^depends what you wanna do with it. for drifting and stuff like that rwd is pretty much a nessesity. every day driving i dont think it would really make a difference.
as for converting to rwd, itd be a lot of work. first of all you gotta find out if theres room for the drivetrain (thats what its called right?), i know on the gen5 someone said it looks like theres a trough for the possibility of rwd/awd, but i dunno about gen4. if there isnt room, youll have to make room, which could mean chopping and moving lots of stuff.
I definately don't have the money now and I've said this on previous discussions, but I wanna do a engine swap eventually.
Right now i'm runnin on the 5sfe,( 4 cyl). sucks ass cause there's not alot of HP or Torqe I can gain. plus I dont think it's worth supercharging.
I was thinking about doing the RWD conversion cause I wanna go with ( don't know the name or number) Infiniti G35 coupe V6 engine. It's a 3.5L 280Hp engine. I'm gonna have to make alot of room up in the engine bay for this baby if I swap. might need to move the battery and shit to the trunk.
What do you think?

instead of goin with a Nissan parts, why not use the newer Supra/GS 300 engine and shaft, either way it's expensive. Most of these guys on this forum will get u for this tomorrow. U could buy a 99 GS 300 with the money u'll be spendin.
All Japanese Camries come with a 4wd option, so if your gen 1-3, and Gen 5 was built in Japan, it's possible, but you'd have to get the rear axles, differential, disc brakes, drive train, ECU, drive shaft, new exhaust to go around the differential, remount the gas tank, re-work the suspension and get all that welded on. Probably $10 grand with parts and engine and labor.
If you got an American built (most Gen 4's sold in North America were built in Kentucky, just like JDM Camry Gracias), you gotta re-work the chassis completely along with the other stuff listed above. $20 grand with Labor and parts and engine.
It'll never happen. Hey why not add highlander 4wd components, swap in supercharged v6. Seems more realistic yet still kinda out there. Or drop in a 3sgte motor with a celica/camry all-trac drivetrain? You'd also have trouble getting past smog and inspection with an infinity motor. You could prob run a driveshaft though where the exhaust is and re-route the exhaust. Still I don't see anyone ever doing anything like this. But it would be cool.
I'm just puttin things up in the air. You never know what anybody is thinking about doing to their car. Sometimes even if it cost the $$$, people do it. Either cause they are really crazy about modding their car and don't care about money or to simply turn heads.

Originally posted by war0827 I know that the gen4 camry is a FWD, but if I wanted to swap the engine that is RWD, how much work is involved into modding it?
And is it better to have the FWD or RWD?
"Better" is a question of personal preference. One thing is for sure, the steering feel on a RWD is a lot cleaner than in a FWD. In RWD, you just don't get the torque steer and other little signals that the fronts are overworked handling both steering and propulsion duties. My wife's monstrous Sequoia handles pretty much like a tank, but I love how clean and neutral the steering feels when compared to my V-6 Camry.
IMO, forget the transformation. Take your car and the $ you'd spend butchering your Camry, and get a good recent IS-300, GS-300, or G-35. You could do that literally today or tomorrow, time permitting, and you'll have what you want, with tested hardware in place. Do the surgery and you'll be a guinea pig for the rest of the car's life (which will likely be a long time since you'll have a very hard time trying unload it...).
There's a guy on here, one of our Australian buddies, who converted his Gen3 to RWD. He used the rear end out of a Tacoma, and I'm assuming the Tacoma driveshaft and tranny as well. And might I ask, why the hell do you want a Nissan engine in your Toyota?

If torque actually won races, wouldn't we all be driving diesels?
sure u wanna spend the $$$$$$...cus switchin a car from a FWD to a RWD is a very expensive, long, and time consuming project....a RWD might be better but i think for the money....you would be better off buying a supra...jus my 2 cents

I know that the swap would be extremely expensive, but right now i'm just looking into what i could put into car and make that shit something that no one else has.
I would definately want a supra, but when is that car coming out?
