alright, i changed my rotors and pads with my dad and my neighbor on friday afternoon. oem replacement parts from carquest. we changed them because they've been squeeling for 6 months, and when we took it in to the shop, they told us it was the rotors and not the pads. so when we took the wheels off, we agreed that the rotors needed to be changed, and the pads were also pretty worn at this point. so i've been driving a bit since then, and the damn things still make noise!!! we had gotten the haynes manual from the library, but didn't really use it. when i looked through it after we finished, we had done everything right, but there were no anti-squeel springs in there. did the 4 cyl. gen 3's have those? if so, how much do they help to reduce noise? can i pick some up from a toyota dealer? what other things can i do/check to help get rid of the noise? thanks.

yes there are, you are missing the anti-squeal pads that go on the back of the pad between it and the caliper
it obviously seems to make a large difference as it seems in your case(and as the name of the part would point out ).. make sure you put the correct grease in there too... I got Midas to do my front breaks cuz I was lazy and they used tones of the stuff
Hold on, before you run for the special Toyota part that fixes this.
My friend just changed my pads and soaked the pads in anti-squeal spray. Worlks like a charm and hasn't squealed in the last 5000 (did every so often in the last set of pads). There are several makes.

They're called shimmies or shims or whatever. Know how much they cost to replace? mine are kind of rusted and a few of the little tabs broke off.

They cost about 20 bucks, usually these are what causes the squeeking. There also called brake harwdware. Also what kind of material are the pads? Semi-metallic, organic or ceramic. You want to go with a ceramic pad, preferably dealer or akebono(same thing). I prefer the akebono pad because the vent slot in the pad goes down farther into the material. Havent noticed any squeeks or anything.
Another thing that can cause brakes to squeel are worn out lower ball joints. This happened to my moms 91 v6. The left lower ball joint had play in it causing small vibrations which in turn made the left front brake squeel.
This is for a 92 V6. Don't bother with the rear kits, the service manager guy said they didn't even carry them...they said it was useless and a waste of money.
anyone got a pic of what those springs or shims looks like? I had exactly the same problem for the past year. Last summer my breaks started insanly squeeling, I changed the pads to ceramic Bosh (sp?) break pads, in a month they start squeeling as well, so i took them off and returned them, I bought life time warranty, plus they were all crumbled anyway. So I put on the new ones and now they still squeel when I break. Altough I didnt see anything on the old breaks that I needed to take off to put on the new ones.
Anyway, if you guys show me what it all looks like I'll go get it, I can't stand that noise anymore.

well, i forgot to mention that the pads we got already came with shims on them, so that's not the problem. also, my dad says that when he was looking at the haynes manual, the anti-squeal spring were only on 94 and 95 for gen 3's. the pads we got were organics. those were 48 bucks for the fronts where as the ceramics were 78. i wasn't paying for it, and it's not my car anyways, so we got the organics.
carquest sold some stuff that you spay either on the caliper or the back of the pad (can't remember which) that holds the pad to the caliper. the guy told us that the pad moving against the caliper under braking can cause squealing. anyone know if this type of product works?
