Spark plug wire boot

Ok on the I4 engine the spark plugs are at the bottom of the tube.. one of the rubber boots that fits on the end of the spark plug wire came of... is coated in oil... and I have tried everything that I can think of to get it out of there... anyone know what they do when they run into this at a shop? lol

I have tried:
-screw driver
-cloth over the end of the spark plug wire to get more grip
-wrapping a couple of turns of electrical tape to the bottom of the spark plug wire right where the "bump" is.. the part that is supposed to hold the rubber on
-I tired one of those long snake like tools that you push in on the end and 4 metal claws come out... but I could not get a grip on the rubber part with the oil that is in there

anyone have any other ideas?

Here is a pic of the missing boot and then a pic of it at the bottom

your best bet is probably to go out and get some really skinny long needle nose pliers, or some surgery clamps (foreceps i think they're called)

I have same problem on a Protege... the stupid Active Green & Ross guy did not put the oil cap back on after a lube and filter change last summer, I used a long needle nose plier to get them out (just last week) when I looked at the plugs.

Now the crud went into the cylinders!

Or trun around the whole car From my experience I'd say once you've tried that long to get it without success, stop for a few hours and try again later, take your time and think well about the best way. Once you start getting mad, you'll only be able to mess up with it. I know it seems stupid but it's true

or a coat hanger (i use them lots) cut it on an angle so its sharp

you could even bend the end 1/4 inch 90 degrees or more so you can yank it out

Good call man! I will give that a try some time soon

I have not bothered trying to get it out since I tried all those things the first day I encountered it... that was also the day I posted this

aren't those called 'hemostats'? i think either one would apply...

hmmm....craftsman has a long pick with a nice 90 degree hook on the end. That would work. Good luck. I hope you get it out. I know you will it's just one of these things that will take you time and patience.
