does anyone know how much horsepower the stock tranny from a 1996 manual 5sfe camry can handle? I'm looking to swap a 3sgte into it and I wanna know how much i can build up the motor with that tranny arrangement without dropping it out onto the highway. Thanks guys
depending on if u build it or not a 5sfe can handle upwards of 500 crank hp if built properly or as low 150 crank hp if not, all depends on how it how its built, u have to spend money to play with the camry, its not a honda so by no means are there n e real parts available, just about everythings is gonna be custom fitted and cost an arm and a leg
That's helpful, but I was really wondering about the tranny itself, cause I was planning on reusing it for a motor swap and I don't wanna drop the tranny on the pavement the first time I romp on the gas...
auto tranny starts giving on the 4cyl above 200 hp, the manual is supposed to be good for up to 500 if u know how to drive it and don't smack the gears around like your on crack and driving a honda hehe j/k but thats what i've seen

Karma is correct on the 5S-FE 5 speed tranny handle almost 500hp at the crank... I would suggest act 6 puck clutch and granny shifting... I wouldnt suggest 3000rpm drops for the tranny , unless you want to see what your 5speed tranny looks like from the inside...
so what you guys are saying is that in gear it'll handle around 500hp, but if i try to launch the car pretty good, then It'll hit the pavement with a serious thud, Right?
why the radical difference between auto tranny and manual? i was hoping to keep my auto when either turboing my 5S-FE or doing a engine swap. how can you beef up a auto tranny?

nope just you would have to feather the clutch off the line ... but you'll need to upgrade the clutch and have the tranny over hauled for the insurance...

if you do a engine swap and want to keep your automatic theres 3 ways of doing it.. 1) running a 3S-FE and tune it for turbocharging duties, modify the fuel and ignition maps...2) running an late model J-spec. 3S-GE automatic ecu and tune the ecu for turbocharging, modify the fuel and ignition maps... 3) stand alone...
as for re-enforcing the automatic tranny you could try to give Level 10 ( if they're still in business) or Sound Performance in Chicago... But be ready to spend between $5000 to $7000 ( turst me I've already researched this)...
the auto tranny will hold fine on the turbo fo a while, mines was holding up and i was boosting more than what the burien kit does. i suggest tho some source of cooling for it, via tranny cooler, and don't get boost happy or u will end up blowing fluid out everywhere, i mean yeah u can boost and race everyonce in a while but don't go on no hour racing spree where your racing everyone and their mom in like 100 degree weather, if so your asking for trouble
