i was driving alogn this mornin and kept hearing a popping noise. i get home and someone says "you think it could be bc there is only two lugs holding this rim on?" ............. apparently they all broke off while i was driving since last night bc they were all there last night. i guess my question is have any of you ever had a problem with your lugs braking. and what could have probably caused it. thanks for any replies you may have

Wow man, that is crazy
They might have not been tight enough.. they could have been too tight (more then 80 foot pounds of pressure)
Or someone jacked 3 of them... some ppl are sick minded
i didnt know that about 80ft lbs of pressure...... how sad... lol. im goin to meineke tomorrow when i get off work to get em to check it out. i don think i should do too much driving though with it like this.
^ Yea what he said. Your lugs were probably loose.
More than 80 lbs is too much pressure? I know that 77 or so is the torque spec for the lugs but my car vibrates when they my lugs are torque to that spec. I retightened my lugs to 100 foot pounds and the vibrating stopped.

well I am not 100% sure.. I have Enkei RF1 Mags and they told me where I got them to tighten the nuts to 80 foot pounds... idk if it matters what type of rim you have...
This happened to me with my old wheels. The 2 lugs on one wheel fell off because they weren't tight enough and the weight snapped off the wheel studs. Thats what happened to your studs after you were driving around with only two lugs.

I had three lugs break off on me once. I believe it was because I didn't have any hub-centric rings. All of the weight was on the lugs instead of the hub.

hub centric ring..... hmmm.. you kno i kinda was wondering about that. that could have very well been the case. of course all of these things seem very logical.

as for this, honestly i dont know. i just asked my friend and he said they are.
When I had lug trouble with a tire shop *cough*Tires Plus*cough* the problem was that they really over-tightened and partially stripped the lugnuts, putting extra stress on the studs. The lug studs had broken off when I tried to tighten the damaged nuts (by hand).
Why is it so frickin' hard to find a good garage you can trust?
geeeeeeez glad mine arent comin apart like that. but yea basically thts where my trouble started was with one tht i had to replace cuz this guy at a garage used an impact wrench to put the tire back on the car and over tightened it. but its only been on this one wheel tht im havin trouble with. i suppose its just time to start replacin em.
hmm....I don't know..its a tough call about that. technician do go to automotive school for their training. I went to Lincoln Technical Institute. When it comes to Lugs its common that they break even if your're a 20 year tech. They break mainly because it was torque improperly, rust buildup, last person that put them on cross threaded them on. All lugs should be hand started before using an impact wrench. Then torqued in a star pattern a few times. Not properly torquing your lugs on the wheels could cause wear to the rotors fast.

welp got it replaced today cost me around 65 dollars. though i coulda done it myself for about 10 bux max. but considerin i didnt have time or patience and not to mention am just plain lazy i suppose i got off decent. thanks for all the suggestions guys and i think i figured out the problem. i had forgotten one of the lugs had broken off when i was changing my brake rotors and i think it has to do with the hubcentric ring i keep hearing about. i figure with tht lug being missing and there not being a hubcentric ring put to much pressure on the studs causing them to break. thank you guys for all the input.
