Question Cold air intake on a 1MZ-FE - worth it?

If I were to put a hi-quality (not the one at Wal-Mart for $30) cold air intake on my otherwise stock Camry, would I actually see/feel any gain? Even if I got 5 HP on the top, would I ruin my V6's low-end torque potential?

What about getting a better air filter?

Anything I need to know reguarding air intake on this car/engine?

Thanks!!!

Your wal-mart sells 1MZ-FE intakes for $30?

Now for the useful part:

AEM Dyno Charts

If you do a custom one like I did, you probably won't see 10HP but it should still be a minor improvement. The AEM intakes are

A replacement panel filter clams around 3hp, but the only thing you'll likely notice will be a little bit more growl.

IMO, my intake was worth the $60 or so I spent to build it. The AEM ones aren't a bad deal but I like to do custom stuff so I built my own.

I think it was worth it. Helped the mid-to-high rpms.

mobes: no, they sell generic CAI's for ricers. Cheap trash.

mobes (post 2): those numbers are VERY impressive for a cold air intake! I see those #'s are for the gen 3, and they say a gen 4 kit is coming. I would sure be interested when they came out. Where can you buy the kits?

Warped: did you really feel the difference? My friend put a cold air intake into his AE86 and he said if anything, it revved better, and the car felt smoother overall.

ive been seriously considering a cai for my car recently. Are there any bad negatives about it? besides the water getting sucked in part.

You can get the AEM's from Cox Import.

You won't have a problem with water being sucked in unless you drive through a river or something, you'd have to submerge nearly the entire filter for it to suck up eneough water to cause damage. I've only seen/heard about 2 cars that were hydrolocked, and it happend by driving through water around 2' deep, which would cause problems even with your stock intake.

I would think the gen4 ones would work but until they're out, it's hard to say.

The MAF is different on the gen3, so unless you bought a gen3 MAF it wouldn't fit, and even then there would be no guarantees.

What I did is buy an eBay short ram and extended it, I used exhaust tubing and couplers from Home Depot. That would be the easiest way to do it for gen4 because of the MAF setup.

Yeah I felt a difference. Our engines have more displacement than your friend's AE86, so breathing mods for our cars will have a greater effect than a 1.6L.

According to the AEM website, there are a ton of Gen. 4 air intakes that are 'comming soon'
